Spanish Post A Level - ONLINE COURSE

Wednesday 19:30-21:00 for 10 weeks

Course Dates: Wednesday 8, 15, 22, 29 October; 5, 12, 19, 26 November; 3, 10 December 2025

Course Delivery: This is a blended learning class which will consist of a weekly 90 minute online class together with supporting resources. These resources will include a 5-10 minute preparation video, focusing on a relevant language teaching point to the upcoming class and 30 minutes of online exercises to follow up on teaching in the online class. You will be expected to watch the video and complete the online exercises ahead of each weekly class. Online classes will be delivered using Microsoft Teams and will be limited to a maximum of 20 students. These classes are being designed to be interactive and engaging.

Learning Objectives: Students taking the level 7 course should either have completed an A-level examination in the subject, completed level 6 here at Queen’s, or have an equivalent knowledge of the Language. The aim of level 7 is to develop strong language skills, cultural awareness and grammatical ability, giving the student confidence in their ability to express themselves and to communicate in a working environment.

1. Environmental problems/global warming; Give your opinion about the issue; Use of vocabulary and expressions about the topic

2.Modern technologies; Discuss the impact of new technology on business and lifestyle

3. Healthy living and Extreme sports; Use of vocabulary and expressions about having a healthy lifestyle and sports

4. Immigration and xenophobia; Deal with the issue of immigration in Spain and UK; Use of vocabulary and expressions

5. Cultural differences (Spain and UK); Discuss the cultural differences you might see when you travel to Spain and South America; Use of vocabulary and expressions

6. Tourism in Spain; Advantages and disadvantages; Positive and negative impact of tourism in Spain; Use of vocabulary and expressions.

7. Difficulties in finding a job - Consequences of the recession in Spain

8. Brexit: How does it affect the Spanish and UK relationship?

9. Covid 19 - How are they tackling the problem in Spain and UK?

10. Revision unit

Aspects of grammar to be introduced in the pre-class videos:

Ser vs. estar. Pronouns. Possessives and prepositions; Verbs: Use of the present. Imperfect vs indefinido;

Learning Outcomes: Students will have developed a broad vocabulary in the topic areas outlined above and a comprehensive knowledge of all of the main grammatical themes. Students will have developed a strong understanding associated with the media, current affairs, everyday living, as well as working environments and an informed knowledge of tone and agenda in written texts. Students will be able to hold thoughtful discussions and discuss opinions.

Please note: In order to receive a certificate of completion, you must attend a minimum of 7 out of 10 classes.

FAQs

Is there a minimum age to register for a Language Centre course?

You must be a minimum of 18 years old to register for an in person course and a minimum of 16 years old to register for any on-line Language Centre course.

What are the course fees?

There are different fees depending on registration type. All course fees are payable on enrolment. --QUB Student & Staff fee: £20.00 --General Public: £88.00

Are these courses accredited?

A Queen's Certificate will be awarded to all students who attend regularly. A minimum of 70% attendance is required for certification. Certificates will be emailed.

How often do I attend?

Classes, are held weekly, as far as possible outside normal university teaching hours (e.g. late afternoon, early evening, some are scheduled for Wednesday afternoon) and run for 10 weeks starting in October, January and April. You will also be expected to complete homework ahead of class.

Is my registration fee transferrable?

Yes, if you feel after your first class that the level of language is too high/low, you can transfer to another class, provided that there is available space.

What is the refund policy?

All refunds before the start of the course must be requested in writing. Refunds are paid as follows,

Before (and including) 24 September – full refund

25 September to 2 October (inclusive) – 50% refund

No refunds available from 3 October (inclusive)

All requests for refunds need to be made in writing to the Language Centre Manager and must be related to reasons beyond your control and supported by written evidence. These refunds will be at the Language Centre Manager’s discretion. All refunds, where agreed, will be subject to an administrative fee of £10.00 for QUB staff and students and £40 for members of the public.
