The Language Centre currently run a Sign Language programme which includes classes at beginner and post-beginner levels. Sign Language Classes which begin in October will run for the full academic year, including some Saturdays.
Sign Language level 2 consists of 3 units. These units are taken separately, and students can choose to take 1, 2 or all 3 units. Please note that in order to receive a FULL certificate for BSL Level 2, students must successfully complete all 3 units. That is, BSL201, BSL202 and BSL203.

Please note that your exam for BSL201 will take place on Monday 15 December during normal class time.

For BSL201 you watch a video and answer 12 multiple-choice questions.
Theme 1 Mandatory Everyday Conversation.
Theme 1 is mandatory. Learners will be assessed on the content of Theme 1 in Unit 201. The hours within the unit include time for practice and assessment.

Is there a minimum age to register for a Language Centre course?
You must be over 18 to attend any Language Centre in person course and 16 to attend an online course.
What are the course fees?
There are different fees depending upon your registration type, QUB student, staff or members of the public. Please note that there is no concession fee available with our Sign Language courses.

Are there examination fees?
Your examination fees are included in your course fee. You can have one attempt at BSL 201. Students will have to pay for any resits. Resits will be organised by the Language Centre.
Are these courses accredited?
Upon successful completion of all 3 modules students are awarded a Signature Certificate in British Sign Language (level 2). In addition QUB Students can use Sign Language Level 2 to apply for the Degree Plus Award, Route A. To qualify students must attend a minimum of 70% of classes and pass a minimum of 2 out of 3 modules.
Degree Plus is a new award for Queen’s students designed to provide official recognition of extra-curricular activities including Language Centre language courses which are open to all students whatever their degree subject. Employers are looking for graduates who can demonstrate that they have the skills needed for workplace success – the Degree Plus Award will help you do this!
How often do I attend?
Students attend a weekly 2.5 hour class on Monday for 11 weeks. In addition, students are required to attend one Saturday morning classes from 10.00-12:30. Sign Language is a very intensive class and full attendance is required.
What's the refund policy?
All refunds before the start of the course must be requested in writing. Refunds are paid as follows:
Before (and including) 24 September – full refund
25 September to 2 October (inclusive) – 50% refund
No refunds available from 3 October (inclusive)
All requests for refunds need to be made in writing to the Language Centre Manager and must be related to reasons beyond your control and supported by written evidence. These refunds will be at the Language Centre Manager’s discretion. All refunds, where agreed, will be subject to an administrative fee of £10.00 for QUB staff and students and £40 for members of the public.
