BSL103 is the last of 3 units which make up Sign Language Level 1. Students must complete BSL101 and 102 before undertaking BSL103.

Course Information:
Signature BSL level 1 is split into three units, BSL101, 102 and 103. BSL103 is the last unit to be attempted.
In order to receive a Signature certificate in BSL level 1 students must successfully complete all 3 modules.
This unit is assessed individually by having a conversation with your BSL teacher. This conversation is filmed and the recording is forwarded to Signature for assessment.
Students must complete modules in order, that is, BSL101, BSL102 and finally BSL103.
Please note: Examination Date will be Thursday 18 December during normal class time.
Course Content:
This unit covers the learner’s receptive and productive skills. To achieve this unit, the learners must show limited range of vocabulary and can follow simple sentences and structures in BSL about everyday life. They will understand standard signing, with facial expression, signing space and placement.
In this unit, the term ‘everyday life’ relates to work, school or college and other familiar routines, environments and activities. Learners are expected to know and use BSL in their own environment. School pupils are not expected to know/use vocabulary relating to work. Adults are not expected to know/use the range of vocabulary relating to school, although they may need vocabulary for ‘college’ as well as work.

Is there a minimum age to register for a Language Centre course?
You must be a minimum of 18 years old to register for an in person course and a minimum of 16 years old to register for any on-line Language Centre course.
What are the course fees?
There are different fees depending upon your registration type, QUB student, staff or members of the public. Please note that there is no concession fee available with our Sign Language courses.

Are there examination fees?
Your examination fee is included in your course fee. You can have one attempt at BSL103, Students will have to pay for any resits. Resits will be organised by the Language Centre and will take normally take place at the end of each semester.
Are these courses accredited?
Upon successful completion of all 3 modules students are awarded a Signature Certificate in British Sign Language level 1. In addition QUB Students can use Sign Language Level 1 to apply for the Degree Plus Award, Route A. To qualify students must attend a minimum of 70% of classes and pass a minimum of BSL101 and BSL102 and have registered to take BSL103 .
How often do I attend?
Students attend a weekly 2 hour class. Sign Language is a very intensive class and full attendance is compulsory.
What's the refund policy?
All refunds before the start of the course must be requested in writing. Refunds are paid as follows:
Before (and including) 24 September – full refund
25 September to 2 October (inclusive) – 50% refund
No refunds available from 3 October (inclusive)
Refunds are not normally paid after the beginning of classes. Any such request must be made in writing to the Language Centre Manager and must be related to reasons beyond your control and supported by written evidence. These refunds will be at the Language Centre Manager’s discretion. All refunds, where agreed, will be subject to an administrative fee of £10.00 for QUB staff and students and £40 for members of the public.
