BSL101 is the first of 3 units which make up Sign Language Level 1.

Course Fees: £80 for QUB staff and students; £120 for members of the public (no concession rates are available)

Course Information:

BSL level 1 is split into three units, BSL101, 102 and 103. Students must take modules in this order. In order to receive a Signature certificate in BSL level 1 students must successfully complete and pass all 3 modules. Signature are the awarding and governing body for this exam.

This unit is assessed individually by having a conversation with your BSL teacher. Unit 101 is assessed by your class tutor and ordinarily is not recorded unless selected by Signature for quality assurance purposes.

Examination date will be Thursday 11 December and you must be available to take the exam on this date.

Introduction to BSL: Topics covered include; at home, people, animals and objects, using numbers, interests and activities, and weather.

Is there a minimum age to register for a Language Centre course?

You must be a minimum of 18 years old to register for an in person course and a minimum of 16 years old to register for any on-line Language Centre course.

Are there examination fees?

Your examination fee is included in your course fee. You can have one attempt at BSL101 included in your registration fee. Students will have to pay for any resits. Resits will be organised by the Language Centre and will take normally take place at the end of each semester.

Are these courses accredited?

Upon successful completion of all 3 modules students are awarded a Signature Certificate in British Sign Language (level 1).

How often do I attend?

Students attend a weekly 2 hour class . Sign Language is a very intensive class and full attendance is recommended to progress through the course.

What is the refund policy?

All refunds before the start of the course must be requested in writing. Refunds are paid as follows,

Before (and including) 24 September – full refund

25 September to 2 October (inclusive) – 50% refund

No refunds available from 3 October (inclusive)

All requests for refunds need to be made in writing to the Language Centre Manager and must be related to reasons beyond your control and supported by written evidence. These refunds will be at the Language Centre Manager’s discretion. All refunds, where agreed, will be subject to an administrative fee of £10.00 for QUB staff and students and £40 for members of the public.
