Set in the context of the expansion of the British Empire in the nineteenth century, this short course will explore the complex relations between, and interconnected histories of, British policymakers, Boer settlers and the Zulu kingdom in southern Africa. The study encompasses Britain's acquisition of the Cape Colony during the Napoleon Wars; the Great Trek of the Boer/Afrikaner people in the 1830s as they sought to escape British rule; conflict between the Boers and the native tribes; and Britain's own Zulu War of 1879. Ultimately, and almost inevitably after the discovery of gold in the Transvaal, Britain and the Boer republics fight two wars - in 1881 and 1899-1902 - that determine the shape of the future dominion of South Africa.
