The Normans radically changed the history of Ireland in the 12th century. The Battle of Hastings of 1066 put William the Conqueror on the English throne. Almost exactly a century later, disputes within the Irish kingdom of Dermot MacMurrough led to Norman intervention which quickly escalated into claims over the whole of Ireland. We'll look at the principal factors in these developments, trace their history, and consider the virtually independent principality of John de Courcy in Ulster.
