This course offers an introduction to women’s history by looking in depth at five female archetypes: the saint, the sinner, the wife/mother, the witch and the rebel. We will look at how these archetypes have shaped women’s stories from the early modern period to the turn of the 20th century. The course will focus on Britain and Ireland and the women often written out of history. Contemporary sources will be used to illustrate how popular culture created and constructed different types of womanhood and how women conformed to or defied those expectations. By uncovering the lives of these women, we will discover how all kinds of women actually did make their mark on history.
