Mary Montague, BSc, PGCE, MSc, PhD
Fee £30.00 (no concession)
Half-day workshop on Wednesday 14 May, 10.00 am to 3.00 pm (lunch break of 50 minutes) (Please note new date different to date published in brochure)
Whether you want to get to grips with the dawn chorus or the songs of a just few bird species, this workshop on learning about birdsong will get you started. With the help of ornithologist, Dr Mary Montague, you will be immersed in the songs of a range of local species. Listening exercises, with the visual aid of song spectrograms – which give a ‘picture’ of the song – will help develop your ear by cueing you into the typical sound patterns. You will also be given the opportunity to increase your understanding of the biological and ecological factors that underlie birdsong. In addition, Mary looks at some of the ways birds have inspired music and poetry down the centuries, and how this can contribute to your knowledge and appreciation of birds. Beginners and experienced birdwatchers are equally welcome. Come and get your ears opened!
This class will take place on QUB campus
