Monday 17:00-19:00 for 10 weeks

Course Dates: Monday 6, 13, 20, 27 October; 3, 10, 17, 24 November; 1, 8 December 2025

Course Delivery: This course will include a weekly in-person class lasting 2 hours, accompanied by supplemental resources. Each week, you will have access to contemporary online tools that highlight a key language teaching concept relevant to the upcoming session, along with 30 minutes of online exercises designed to reinforce what you have learned in class. Classes will be limited to a maximum of 20 students.

Learning Objectives: Students taking the level 5 course should either have completed a GCSE examination in the subject, or have an equivalent knowledge of the language. The aim of level 5 is to develop strong language skills, cultural awareness and grammatical ability, giving the student confidence in their reading, listening, speaking and writing skills.

Topics

  • My world: Exposure to vocabulary and structures to enable students to discuss their hobbies and interests with specific focus on the arts, film, sport and music.

Language focus : Nouns and their gender. Past tense including autonomous form.

  • Health and wellbeing : Explore vocabulary and structures to encourage discussion on lifestyle ; exercise, diet , sport , illness, disability issues.

Language focus : Prepositions.

  • Social Media : Discuss the impact of social media on society. Give your opinion on the advantages and disadvantages of the use of social media in today’s world.

Language focus : Prepositions. Present tense including autonomous form.

  • Travel : Discuss future travel plans and explore why young people are moving abroad to live and work.

Language focus : Adjectives; comparative and superlative form. Future tense including autonomous form.

  • The life of dreams : Exposure to the grammar, vocabulary and structures to enable discussion in the conditional tense.

Language focus : The Conditional Tense.

Learning outcomes: Students will engage in discussions and share their opinions. They will have built a wide-ranging vocabulary related to the topics mentioned above and gained a thorough understanding of key grammatical concepts. Additionally, students will be familiar with common words and phrases used in daily life and social settings.

Please note: In order to receive a certificate of completion, you must attend a minimum of 7 out of 10 classes.

Is there a minimum age to register for a Language Centre course?

You must be a minimum of 18 years old to register for an in person course and a minimum of 16 years old to register for any on-line Language Centre course.

What are the course fees?

There are different fees depending on registration type. All course fees are payable on enrolment. --QUB Student & Staff fee: £20.00 --General Public: £88.00

Are these courses accredited?

A Queen's Certificate will be awarded to all students who attend regularly. A minimum of 70% attendance is required for certification. Certificates will be emailed.

How often do I attend?

Classes, are held weekly, as far as possible outside normal university teaching hours (e.g. late afternoon, early evening, some are scheduled for Wednesday afternoon) and run for 10 weeks starting in October, January and April. You will also be expected to complete homework ahead of class.

Is my registration fee transferrable?

Yes, if you feel after your first class that the level of language is too high/low, you can transfer to another class, provided that there is available space.

What is the refund policy?

All refunds before the start of the course must be requested in writing. Refunds are paid as follows,

Before (and including) 24 September – full refund

25 September to 2 October (inclusive) – 50% refund

No refunds available from 3 October (inclusive)

All requests for refunds need to be made in writing to the Language Centre Manager and must be related to reasons beyond your control and supported by written evidence. These refunds will be at the Language Centre Manager’s discretion. All refunds, where agreed, will be subject to an administrative fee of £10.00 for QUB staff and students and £40 for members of the public.
