Signature Level BSL203

Monday 17:00-19:30 & Saturday 10:00 - 12:30

Duration: 35 hours/1 semester

Sign Language level 2 consists of 3 units. These units are taken separately, and students can choose to take 1, 2 or all 3 units. Please note that in order to receive a FULL certificate for BSL Level 2, students must successfully complete all 3 units. That is, BSL201, BSL202 and BSL203.

Plus Saturday 16, 30 May; 13, 27 June 2026 10:00-12:30

Please note that your exam for BSL203 will take place on Monday 29 June during normal class time.

BSL203: Conversational Skills

Optional themes: Pick two of these themes. The themes chosen for unit BSL202 and BSL203 must be different.

Theme 3: Spending and Shopping

Theme 4: Travel and Holidays

The two optional themes will be chosen by the teacher in consultation with the learner.

In Unit BSL201 learners will be assessed on the content of Theme 1 only. The hours within the unit include time for practice and assessment. In Units BSL202 and BSL203 learners will use and build upon the vocabulary and grammatical features of Theme 1.

Themes 2, 3 and 4 include the vocabulary from Theme 1. Learners are expected to increase their understanding and use of BSL grammar and vocabulary in these units. Some of the BSL2 Qualification Specification 4 learning hours will be used to practice their skills and carry out the assessment for Units BSL202 and BSL203.

For Unit BSL203 learners will be assessed on the content of Theme 1 and the second choice of the optional themes.

Is there a minimum age to register for a Language Centre course?

You must be over 18 to attend any Language Centre in person course and 16 to attend an online course.

What are the course fees?

There are different fees depending upon your registration type, QUB student, staff or members of the public. Please note that there is no concession fee available with our Sign Language courses.

Are there examination fees?

Your examination fees are included in your course fee. You can have one attempt at BSL 203. Students will have to pay for any resits. Resits will be organised by the Language Centre.

Are these courses accredited?

Upon successful completion of all 3 modules students are awarded a Signature Certificate in British Sign Language (level 2). In addition QUB Students can use Sign Language Level 2 to apply for the Degree Plus Award, Route A. To qualify students must attend a minimum of 70% of classes and pass a minimum of 2 out of 3 modules.

Degree Plus is a new award for Queen’s students designed to provide official recognition of extra-curricular activities including Language Centre language courses which are open to all students whatever their degree subject. Employers are looking for graduates who can demonstrate that they have the skills needed for workplace success – the Degree Plus Award will help you do this!

How often do I attend?

Students attend a weekly 2.5 hour class on Monday for 10 weeks. In addition, students are required to attend four Saturday morning classes from 10.00-12:30. Sign Language is a very intensive class and full attendance is required.

What's the refund policy?

All refunds before the start of the course must be requested in writing by email to [email protected]

9 April to 16 April (inclusive) – 50% refund

No refunds available from 17 April (inclusive)

Refund requests from 17 April: All requests for refunds need to be made in writing to the Language Centre Manager and must be related to reasons beyond your control and supported by written evidence. These refunds will be at the Language Centre Manager’s discretion.
