Course Dates: Thursday 23, 30 April; 7, 14, 21, 28 May; 4, 11, 18, 25 June 2026

Course Delivery: This is a blended learning class which will consist of a weekly 90 minute online class together with supporting resources. These resources will include a 5-10 minute preparation video, focusing on a relevant language teaching point to the upcoming class and 30 minutes of online exercises to follow up on teaching in the online class. You will be expected to watch the video and complete the online exercises ahead of each weekly class. Online classes will be delivered using Microsoft Teams and will be limited to a maximum of 20 students. These classes are being designed to be interactive and engaging.

Learning Objectives: Students taking the level 2 course should either have completed level 1, or have only a basic previous knowledge of the language. The aim of level 2 is to develop basic language skills, the culture and basic grammatical concepts and to equip them with the skills to communicate at a post-beginners level in a target language context.

Potential Topics:

1. Revision of level 1 material ; Ask and answer (formal and informal style) - What’s your name? What is your nationality? What languages do you know? Where are you from? Where do you live? What’s your address? How old are you? What do you do (work or study)? What is your occupation? Do you have a family? etc.

2. Interests and favourite pastimes; What do you (sir /madame) like to do? – question and answer.; Verbs describing various pastime activities; What do you like? – revision of the Accusative case-n.sg; What are you interested in? – revision of the Instrumental case -n.sg./n.pl.

3. Time – describing how often we do something (always, sometimes, etc.); How often do you (sir /madame) ..go to the cinema?- ask and answer; Conjugations of verbs – m,-sz / -ę,-isz.-ysz/ -ę,-esz/ -ować

4. Food (1) -names of fruit, vegetables, products and dishes; Numbers 100-1000; What do you (sir /madame) usually eat and drink for breakfast /lunch /dinner? -ask and answer; Revision of the Accusative case; How much is it?; How much are they? -ask and answer.

5. Food (2) -coffee shop and restaurant; Coffee shop and restaurant menu and dialogues.

6. Time – describing what we usually do first and later; Times of the day; Days of the week; Describing your typical day.; What do you (sir / madame) usually do first and what later? -ask and answer; The Instrumental case of personal pronouns.

7. Time- telling time the official way; Irregular verbs; What time is it? – ask and answer (official way); How to use verbs iść / chodzić and jechać / jeździć (to go) and wiedzieć, umieć, znać (to know).

8. Time – telling time the unofficial way and describing at what time we do something; What time is it? -ask and answer (unofficial way); At what time .. do you go to work? -ask and answer.

9. Making plans and arranging a meeting; Talking about dislikes; The Genitive case -n.sg. Proposing / suggesting a meeting or activity, accepting and refusing; Do you (sir /madame ) like ..? Yes, I do like.. / No, I don’t like .. – ask and answer; Revision of the Accusative and practising the new case of the Genitive (n.sg.)

10. Travelling – by train /by bus; Buying tickets and asking for information.

Learning outcomes: Students will have developed a post-beginner’s vocabulary in the topic areas outlined above, enabling them to hold a simple conversation in the language. Students will understand frequently used words and phrases. Students will be able to formulate sentences.

FAQs

Is there a minimum age to register for a Language Centre course?

You must be a minimum of 18 years old to register for an in person course and a minimum of 16 years old to register for any on-line Language Centre course.

What are the course fees?

There are different fees depending on registration type. All course fees are payable on enrolment. --QUB Student & Staff fee: £20.00 --General Public: £88.00

Are these courses accredited?

A Queen's Certificate will be awarded to all students who attend regularly. A minimum of 70% attendance is required for certification. Certificates will be emailed.

How often do I attend?

Classes, are held weekly, as far as possible outside normal university teaching hours (e.g. late afternoon, early evening, some are scheduled for Wednesday afternoon) and run for 10 weeks starting in October, January and April. You will also be expected to complete homework ahead of class.

Is my registration fee transferrable?

Yes, if you feel after your first class that the level of language is too high/low, you can transfer to another class, provided that there is available space.

What is the refund policy?

All refunds before the start of the course must be requested in writing by email to [email protected]

9 April to 16 April (inclusive) – 50% refund

No refunds available from 17 April (inclusive)

Refund requests from 17 April: All requests for refunds need to be made in writing to the Language Centre Manager and must be related to reasons beyond your control and supported by written evidence. These refunds will be at the Language Centre Manager’s discretion.
