Autumn 2026
Half-day walking tour on Wednesday 21 October, 9.30 am to 1.30 pm
From the 12th century, the small settlement of Belfast had port facilities initially on the lower reaches of the Farset River [High Street], which flowed into the then wide Lagan. This continued in the 17th and 18th centuries beyond the Farset to larger quays and docks along the Lagan. Following the opening of the Victoria Channel [1849] the growing new town needed new facilities and associated buildings. These were orientated along the new N/S axis of Corporation and Victoria streets. The walk examines examples of the associated buildings of this period. These include the Custom House, the Harbour Office, surviving Clarendon Dock structures, the Headline and former Corn Exchange [now the Ulster-Scots Hub] buildings and Sinclair Seamen's Church. It finishes at St. George's Church in High Street the site of the "Ecclesia Alba de Vado" [Church of the White Ford] where it all began in the Middle Ages.
