Autumn 2026

Half-day walking tour on Saturday 7 November, 9.30 am to 1.30 pm

North Belfast grew rapidly along the spine of the Antrim Road in the second half of the 19th century. It evolved from farmland interspersed with country estates and small industrial sites into an up market middle class area before evolving rapidly again into a densely populated mixed income area. All this happened within 50 years. But who were the builders, and what are the best examples of their work? This course uses the term "builder" in the widest sense to include developers, architects and construction firms. We walk from Clifton House, home of The Belfast Charitable Society, to Carlisle Circus and then along the Antrim Road up to Fortwilliam and Belfast Castle, visiting examples of the best of local builders' work and also the major civil engineering feat of the Belfast Waterworks.

We make use of public transport where relevant, and there will be an opportunity to have lunch during the course of the walk.
