Autumn 2026

10 weekly sessions on Fridays, 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm, starting 2 October

The current conflicts in Israel/Palestine have deep tangled roots and the prospects of a lasting just peace remain elusive. The course examines the origins and underlying causes behind the dreadful events which have blighted the Middle East in recent years. The Middle East has played a critical role in the development of our Western Civilisation past and present. The three main monotheistic religions - Judaism, Christianity and Islam have their origins there and yet the region has been the cockpit of conflict for at least 5,000 years right up to the present day.

The course attempts to explain this dichotomy. It is currently wracked by the latest confrontation between the USA and its Israeli ally and Iran. Is there any hope of peace in the long term?

The tutor draws on his personal experiences of the region to try to explain and illustrate the true nature of its problems

This class will take place on QUB campus

No class on Friday 30 October
