Why do great powers go to war with one another? How to avoid conflict? The course examines great power rivalry from the beginning of the early modern to the present day and looks at theories surrounding rising and declining powers, and why war has resulted so often. The reasons why States rise and decline will be discussed along with more recent rivalries such as USA/USSR and whether the rise of China as a superpower is likely to lead to war with the current dominant power, the United States.
