This course explores the auditory world of past civilisations, emphasising the historical, social, and ritual contexts of sound and music. Students examine the instruments, the sounds, and the role of music in daily life, ceremonial practice, and collective experience across cultures such as Egypt, Greece, Mesopotamia, and Rome. Through critical analysis of textual, iconographic, and archaeological evidence, combined with immersive listening and experimental simulations, the course highlights how ancient peoples perceived, structured, and interacted with sound. Emphasis is placed on understanding music as a cultural and experiential phenomenon, fostering insight into the meanings, functions, and sensory dimensions of ancient soundscapes.
This class will take place on QUB campus
