This course introduces the archaeology, culture, and society of the Greek world from the Early Bronze Age (c. 3000) through to the Hellenistic period and the aftermath of Alexander the Great’s empire (c. 323-31 BC). Through the lens of artworks, architecture, and other material remains, we will examine the development of Greek communities and their societal, cultural, and political/ideological changes across time. Major themes will include the Minoan/Mycenaean palatial cultures of the Bronze Age, the emergence of the city-states (the Greek polis) in the Iron Age, Greek interactions with other cultures, the role of sanctuaries, burial, household, and identity.
