How are our lives shaped by the cities in which we live? And how do we, in turn, shape cities? Anthropologists have long been fascinated by the unique qualities of urban experience. They look at the ways in which architecture and infrastructure shape the paths of city dwellers; the ways that public spaces become sites of struggle; and how it is that leisure, ritual, commercial, and community spaces become meaningful, inclusive, or exclusionary. On this course, we will journey together through cities near and far. We will investigate how projects of imperialism, decolonisation and modernisation have formed urban spaces across the world; and explore how anthropology and ethnography are used to look beyond the buildings to the rhythms and flows that form daily life. The course is suitable for learners with a curiosity, yet no prior knowledge, about anthropology and urban studies.
This class will take place on QUB campus
