New Year 2027

A one-day workshop on Saturday 6th February, 10.00 am to 4.00 pm

Our paths are shaped by the objects that we and others gather around us: cherished possessions that sit on windowsills, artefacts on display in museums, photos in family albums, and archived documents. What is kept? Who keeps it? And to tell which stories? This 1-day course will foster critical and creative reflection on collections, power, and story-making. We will examine how collections are produced through mechanisms of class, race, gender, empire and migration; how the material qualities of objects shape ways of feeling history; and how personal and family collections, examined through autoethnography, might complicate the separation between public and private histories. The course is accessible to learners with no prior knowledge of the topics, and offers anthropological perspectives to those familiar with the museum, community, archive and heritage sectors.

This class will take place on QUB campus
