This course explores the rich and influential traditions of Greek and Roman art, from monumental temples and marble sculptures to painted pottery and everyday objects. We will examine how and why images were created, adapted, and re-imagined across cultures. We will consider the development of Greek artistic forms, how they conveyed meaning, how they shaped Roman visual culture, and how both societies used images to express identity, power, belief, and memory. We’ll decode mythological narratives, examine the role of art in ritual and political power, and trace cross-cultural influences and ideas across the Mediterranean. Through a range of interpretive approaches (historical, cultural, symbolic, and material) we will learn to see ancient art as dynamic and deeply human. No prior background is required, just curiosity and a willingness to look closely.
This class will be offered in hybrid form, i.e. you can attend on QUB campus or online
