New Year 2027

10 weekly sessions on Wednesdays, 7.00 pm to 9.00 pm, starting 13 January

This course will examine some of the major figures and movements in Western art in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. We will focus on painting but also take in some of the most renowned sculptural and architectural works from the art centres of France, Germany and Britain. We will use primary sources to put these works into context - how did the invention of the Academics and museums affect artistic production? Why did the grand historical and biblical paintings gradually have to give way to more modest scenes of everyday life? Among the artists we will look at are Delacroix, Courbet, Turner, Manet, Degas, Cezanne and Picasso. We will look at the transitions from Romanticism to Realism and from Impressionism to Modernism.
