New Year 2027
Half-day workshop on Saturday 23 January, 10.00 am to 1.00 pm
Who were the “millies” of Belfast, and what did their working lives look and feel like? What did a day in the mills involve, and what did it do to the body over time? When conditions became too much, how did women respond? This half-day workshop brings the lives of Belfast’s mill workers into focus, looking at the realities of factory work, the impact on health, and the role women played in protest and trade union activity. Drawing on contemporary accounts, the session follows a typical working day, from the noise and pace of the mill floor to the longer-term effects on workers’ bodies and lives. Short source-based activities are built in throughout, giving participants a chance to work with historical material and explore these experiences in a practical, engaging way. No prior knowledge is needed. The session is informal and discussion based.
This class will take place on QUB campus
