10 weekly sessions on Wednesdays, 7.00 pm to 9.00 pm, starting 30 September
This course will examine some of the major figures and movements in Western art from the Italian Renaissance to the French Revolution of 1789. We will focus on painting but also take in some of the most renowned sculptural and architectural works from the art centres of Italy, France, Germany and Britain. We will use primary sources to put these works into context - who commissioned and paid for them? Why were they wanted? How successful were they? Among the artists we will look at are Michelangelo, Raphael, Titian, Caravaggio, Vermeer, Rembrandt, Van Eyck and Jacques-Louis David. We will look at the transitions from Renaissance to Baroque and from Neo-Classicism to Romanticism.
