Autumn 2026
Half-day workshop on Saturday 3 October, 10.00 am to 1.00 pm
What did doctors actually do when they tried to treat madness? How far were they willing to go, and why? This workshop looks at physical treatments used in Ireland, with a focus on Ulster, including electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), malaria therapy and lobotomy. We will look at how these treatments were carried out, why they were used, and what patients experienced. Using short case studies and source material, we will work through how these treatments were understood at the time and what they tell us about changing ideas around the brain, illness and recovery. No prior knowledge is needed. The session is informal and discussion-based.
This class will take place on QUB campus
