Autumn 2026

10 weekly sessions on Fridays 5.00 pm to 7.00 pm, starting 2 October

Step into the unsettling edge of reality. Crafting the Uncanny will draw you into fiction where the ordinary fractures, the familiar turns strange, and meaning slips just out of reach. We will dive into the mysterious terrain of uncanny and Gothic fiction, past and present, and explore techniques and imagery such as doppelgangers, ghosts, déjà vu and the unhomely. Using 'The Uncanny' by Sigmund Freud as our starting point, and through evocative prompts and close readings, you’ll learn how to craft atmosphere, ambiguity and psychological tension with precision. We will explore how and why the short story form is the perfect vehicle for uncanny fiction. We will discover how the uncanny can be more than a genre, how it can be a lens, a way to confront the dislocation and unreality of modern existence, and how we can transform our own experiences into quietly devastating prose.

This class will take place on QUB campus

No class on Friday 30 October
