Autumn 2026

20 weekly sessions on Wednesdays 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm, starting 30 September, restarting 13 January

This course is for anyone interested in the language and literature of ancient Greece. We will read Euripides' last surviving tragedy 'Bacchae', a very troubling play about the god Dionysus and divine vengeance. As well as dealing with translation of the text and grammar points as they arise, we will consider the links between Greek Tragedy and the cult of Dionysus.

Textbook: 'Euripides' Bacchae': Greek text with facing vocabulary and Commentary by Geoffrey Steadman
