The year of 1942 divides into two distinct halves. The line that separates them is marked by the Battle of Midway in June. Up to that point, Japan had swept all before it since the surprise attack on the US Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor in December 1941. In quick succession, Malaya, Singapore, the Philippines, Java, Thailand and Burma fell to Japanese forces. With the bombing of Darwin, there were real fears that Australia might also be vulnerable to invasion. The news was no better in North Africa, where Rommel captured Tobruk in June. However, that was the month when the Americans halted the Japanese advance in the Pacific at Midway. Then in late autumn came Allied offensives in Northwest Africa (Operation Torch) and Egypt (El-Alamein) and the Germans were in retreat. Far from the scorching heat of the desert, the year would end with the German 6th Army fighting for its life in the snow and ice of Stalingrad.
