5 weekly sessions on Thursdays 7.00 pm to 8.30 pm, starting 1 October

In 1918, approximately eight million UK women were enfranchised as a result of the passage of the Representation of the People Bill. This course will explore the campaign which produced this significant feminist victory. In particular, it will examine suffrage militancy, the ‘Votes for women’ movement during the First World War, and feminists’ relations with political parties, including the Labour Party. These classes will consider the impact of such issues, events and interactions on both relations between English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish suffragists and the effectiveness of the women’s enfranchisement cause. As well as highlighting the contribution of well-known figures, such as Emmeline Pankhurst, to the ‘Votes for women’ movement, this course will shine a light on lesser-known activists, like Katherine Walker Lindsay, therefore offering fresh insights into the campaign.

This class will take place on QUB campus
