10 weekly sessions on Wednesdays, 11.00 am to 1.00 pm, starting 30 September
This course will consider the evolution of the modern Irish state using presidential terms as rough signposts. Rather than focusing on the presidents themselves, each week will examine the social, political and cultural forces that shaped Ireland during their terms. This will allow the course more flexibility than a decade-by-decade analysis. It will intentionally omit the revolutionary period and will only touch on Northern Ireland when absolutely required. This purposefully partitionist lens allows the history to stand alone and will hopefully provide some fresh and interesting information to learners from Northern Ireland. From state‑building and economic change to crises, controversies and social liberalisation, this course will provide a snapshot of the southern state and how it has changed over time.
This class will take place on QUB campus
