10 weekly sessions on Mondays, 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm, starting 11 January
This course will explore the particular identity of the American South, how its history has affected the region's culture and how its sense of “otherness” persists today. Films will include In the Heat of the Night and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof while the novels will include Tobacco Road by Erskine Caldwell, The Ballad of the Sad Café by Carson McCullers, Winter’s Bone by Daniel Woodrell, Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell, ‘The Bear’ by William Faulkner (short story within the collection Go Down Moses), A Childhood: Biography of a Place by Harry Crews and To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.
