10 weekly sessions on Tuesdays 7.00 pm to 8.30 pm, starting 19 January

This course explores the life and political career of one of twentieth century Ireland’s most important and most influential politicians, John Hume. In terms of content, the course begins in the mid-1960s with Hume’s local activism in his native Derry/Londonderry and stretches all the way to Hume’s 1998 Nobel Peace Prize win. The course covers a range of themes and phases within Hume’s life and political career, such as: his role in the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Movement in the late 1960s, his twenty-five-year stint as a Member of the European Parliament for Northern Ireland, and his instrumental role in crafting the 1998 Good Friday Agreement. Students in this course will develop critical thinking and communication skills, while also honing subject-specific primary source analysis skills.

This class will take place on QUB campus
