The eighth part of the History of the USA series will cover the two decades between the world wars. Yet, though the country was at peace, these were not quiet years. These were the years of the Roaring 'Twenties, of Prohibition and the emergence of organised crime. They were also the years of booming prosperity, brought to a shattering halt by the Wall Street Crash followed by the onset of the Great Depression. Laissez-faire government, which dominated the 1920s, would ultimately be supplanted by state interventionism on an unprecedented scale in the form of the New Deal, introduced by a new president, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The United States would never be quite the same again.
