Part 9 of a History of Modern Britain covers a 37-year period that was dominated by two men - William Ewart Gladstone and Benjamin Disraeli - who produced a political rivalry unmatched in British history. Between them they held the post of prime minister for 22 years and left a lasting mark on British politics and British life. Indeed, Gladstone caused a major realignment of party politics when he took up the cause of Irish Home Rule in the mid-1880s. The course will also consider the rise of the trade union movement, the Reform Acts of 1867 and 1884 and important developments in the fields of architecture and the arts in the form of the Gothic Revival and the Pre-Raphaelite Movement.
