This course introduces the archaeology, culture, and society of the Greek world from the Late Bronze Age (c. 1600-1125 BC) through to the Hellenistic period and the aftermath of Alexander the Great’s empire (c. 323-31 BC).Through the lens of artworks, architecture, and other material remains, we will examine the development of Greek communities and their societal, cultural, and political/ideological changes across time.Major themes will include the Minoan/Mycenaean palatial culture of the Bronze Age, the emergence of the city-states (the Greek polis) in the Iron Age, Greek interactions with other cultures, the role of sanctuaries, burial, household, and identity.

This class will take place on QUB campus
