Autumn 2025

10 weekly sessions on Mondays 7.00 pm to 9.00 pm, starting 22 September

This course looks at the turbulent life of the great Italian painter Caravaggio. Carrying a chip on his shoulder from his humble Milanese origins, his supreme talents quickly brought him notoriety and prestigious commissions in Rome. But these talents and his hot temper brought him enemies just as quickly. Trouble followed Caravaggio culminating in his being charged with murder and consequently fleeing to Malta. We will consider the huge impact this artist had with his bold and unique style alongside his fascinating biography, full of violence and action at the same time as he was revolutionising painting everywhere he went right up to his dramatic and premature death.
