...and much more besides, from short piano pieces to operas (thirteen in total), symphonies (five) and concertos (ten). Born in 1835, when Mendelssohn and Schumann were still alive, he showed talent from a very young age. The critic Harold Schoenberg said that he was 'the most remarkable child prodigy in history, and that includes Mozart'. Indeed, he began giving piano recitals when he was just five years old! Yet he lived long enough (he died in 1921) to compose the first ever score for a film, in 1908. In this course we will be listening to a wide selection of his music, from familiar works such as the third symphony, the second piano concerto and Danse Macabre, to less well-known, but equally attractive pieces.
This class will take place on QUB campus
