Autumn 2025

10 weekly sessions on Fridays 11.00 am to 12.00 noon, starting 26 September

Come and spend an hour each Friday morning as we explore the life and music of Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809), 'Papa' as he was affectionately known. His long musical career began as a choirboy at St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna and continued as he learnt his trade in the employment of Count Morzin. His thirty years with Prince Esterhazy in the wilds of Hungary saw his genius fully revealed in every genre from operas and symphonies to trios for the baryton, the prince's favourite instrument. We will hear about his great friendship with Mozart and his largely unsuccessful attempts to teach Beethoven, his triumphant years in London and his final majestic choral works, before his death in Vienna during the French bombardment of the city.

This class will take place on QUB campus
