Historically, the products of women’s creativity have been downplayed as ‘crafts’ and differentiated from ‘Art,’ a noble endeavour that belonged mostly, if not exclusively, to men. ‘Women’s work’ was the expression used to indicate the countless ways in which women could express their creativity and included a variety of traditionally female activities such as weaving, embroidering, quilting, scrapbooking, cooking.Even though women from different backgrounds have always incorporated skills and creativity into their daily lives, the products of their work were regarded as radically inferior to works of Art.In this course, we will question the distinction between Art and craft looking at the work of women, ‘famous’ or otherwise, who blurred the boundaries and showed us that creating beautiful objects for daily use is not just pottering about: it’s a form of art.
