10 weekly sessions on Wednesdays 10.00 am to 12.00 noon, starting 21 January
An examination of the medieval church of Latin Christendom from its earliest days as the diocese of Rome to its most powerful position during the Renaissance. While looking at the papacy – including some colourful popes – and the way it interacted with the medieval world, the course will consider the Church’s power, structure, patronage and military campaigns. It will also look at associated topics ranging from heresy, pilgrimage and organisation to benefices and ‘Rome runners’. Although reflecting on 1,500 years of history, the course will be thematic so as to give a rounded assessment of this most enduring of medieval institutions.
