Part 8 of a History of Modern Britain covers the first twenty years of the Victorian era, which saw the country continue to advance economically - celebrated in the Great Exhibition of 1851 - but also experience political unrest as the Chartists campaigned for male suffrage and the secret ballot. The outstanding political personality of the time, Robert Peel, led the struggle to repeal the Corn Laws, but in the process, bitterly divided the Conservative Party and consigned it to almost twenty years in the political wilderness. Two lectures will be devoted to the 'Golden Age' of English literature (one for prose and one for poetry), in which class participation will be invited.
This class will take place on QUB campus
