Between the French revolution in 1789 and 1945, France was at war with a German or German-led state on at least twelve occasions. This perennial struggle led to the eventual demise of both as world powers. The course, while concentrating on the period 1870-1945, also examines the periods before and afterwards with the eventual outcome of partnership and leadership within the European Union, exemplified by the symbolic holding of hands by Chancellor Kohl and President Mitterand at Verdun in 1984.Central to the course is the theme of rising and declining powers and why that dynamic leads so often to war and what role we may expect of the two countries collectively and individually in the 21st century.
This class will take place on QUB campus
