Ecology by its nature is a field that addresses the interaction of organisms with the environment and in doing so regularly involves human activities.Currently in Northern Ireland we are facing many issues and problems concerned with the ongoing pressures that are affecting us all – for example biodiversity loss, pollution of our waterways, and climate change. Many of us wish to change how others behave towards these issues, and we would like to change people’s beliefs and attitudes, and ultimately the decisions they may make. This can take place either at an individual, group or community level. The use of effective communication strategies that consider situations where human judgement is involved and is directed at either individuals or groups of people is key to bringing about desired change. This course will examine the skills needed to be an effective communicator. It will provide an adaptable toolkit that can be used to bring about the desired change relating to the ecological problems that are facing us all. These skills will include how to direct the desired message and its limitations, and the methods that can be employed to overcome resistance. The aim is therefore to achieve environment change that is desired and necessary if we are to avoid the future threats of not doing anything.
