Half-day workshop on Saturday 31 January, 10.00 am to 1.00 pm

For fans of Call the Midwife, medical history enthusiasts and anyone who wants to learn more, this half-day course provides an insight into pregnancy and childbirth throughout history. The class will look at ancient Greek and Roman ideas about pregnancy through to the myths and realities about midwives in the Middle Ages. While focusing on Britain and Ireland, the course will also examine European influences and how medical science began to take an interest in the traditionally female-only practice before the medicalisation of childbirth in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. We will use contemporary sources to see what people believed and how they experienced pregnancy and childbirth and see what midwives were really like throughout history.

This class will take place on QUB campus
