World War One saw the deployment of new military technology on an industrial scale for the first time. This course traces the development and deployment of ten technologies which fundamentally changed the nature of war and led to the massive loss of life in the 1914-18 conflict. It will look at explosives, Dreadnoughts, torpedoes and submarines, railways, machine guns, poison gas, aircraft and zeppelins, motorised transport, radio and communications, and tanks.
